Birth of the Guadalquivir river in Almeria:

ALMERIA "Mirror Sea":   The city of Almeria was founded in 955 A.D. by Abdurrahman III as "Al-Mariyya" ("Mirror of the Sea") at a site where once stood the Roman city of "Portus Magnus" (great harbor).  But its origins go back even to times much older, since before the arrival of the Romans was an Iberian town, named "Urci".  Almeria became the most important port of al-Andalus Umayyad, reaching its peak in the eleventh century, it would become a commercial and cultural emporium.  The city retains the charming appearance reminiscent of this era. Dominating on a hill is the Moorish Alcazaba, with imposing walls. With its warm climate, Almería is a much visited tourist destination, is rich in fruit and vegetable production and an ideal place for the exploitation of solar activity that has developed in recent times
Visitors come mainly attracted by its beaches, its historical and artistic heritage, its natural sites near the city and the various cultural and sporting activities that take place in the province.   Among the places that one should not miss in Almería highlight:
"La Alcazaba", "La Catedral",  "La Iglesia de Santiago",  "La Puerta de Purchena", "El Museo de Almería".
Events:
"Almeria Fair" being held for 10 days in the second half of August. Equestrian activities, swimming harbor cruise, fireworks, make this fair one of the most attractive of Andalucia.  Other Cultural events  such as the Festival Flamenco Folk Festival or the Iberian and Mediterranean, during which groups of different countries present their dances and customs.  These festivals along the International Jazz Festival, the International Film Festival or the International Guitar Competition in Almería make a cultural destination very attractive.
